About
Sherman Cahal
More than twenty-six years a photographer, and a traveler of the back roads.
I was born near Ashland, Kentucky, and took an early interest in the built and natural landscapes of Appalachia. My work documents the region’s historic architecture, its industrial sites, and the cultural landscapes around them — through historical research as much as through photography, and usually the two together.
I am based in Indiana now, and I still approach Appalachia as both a subject of study and a place that is lived in. What I try to bring to it is accuracy, context, and an eye on long-term preservation.
