Terms of Service
What you can do with Halfstop, what it is not safe to rely on it for, and the usual small print.
In effect from 8 September 2026. Last changed 24 September 2026.
The short version
Halfstop is a mapping tool. Use it for anything lawful. What you make in it is yours and you can take it with you at any time. The maps and forecasts come from public sources and can be wrong or out of date, so do not bet your safety on them. We are a small company and this is provided as it is, without a warranty.
Who you are agreeing with
These terms are between you and Halfstop, LLC, an Indiana limited liability company. By using the Halfstop website or app, you accept them. If you do not, please do not use it.
Your account
An account is optional and free. You are responsible for keeping access to the email address it is tied to, because a sign-in link sent there is what proves it is you. Tell us at support@halfstop.app if you think somebody else has got into your account.
You can delete your account at any time from Settings → Account. We may close an account that is being used to break these terms, to attack the service, or to harm somebody.
What you make is yours
Your folders, pins, notes, photographs and imported files remain yours. We claim no ownership of them and we do not use them for anything except storing them so they reach your devices.
You can export any folder as GPX, KML or GeoJSON at any time, with or without an account. That will not be put behind a payment.
What you may not do
- Use Halfstop to break the law, or to help somebody else do it.
- Upload content you have no right to, or that infringes somebody else's rights.
- Attack the service — scraping it in bulk, hammering it automatically, trying to reach other people's data, or working around limits we have set.
- Pull map tiles or forecast data through Halfstop in bulk to build your own product. The services behind it have their own terms, and doing that would breach them and get access cut off for everybody.
- Present Halfstop as your own, or resell access to it.
The maps are not authoritative — this part matters
Halfstop is for planning, not for navigation or for safety. The mapping, land boundaries, road data, airspace and weather all come from public agencies and community sources. Any of it can be out of date, incomplete, or simply wrong at the place you are standing.
Specifically, and not exhaustively:
- A road on the map may not exist, may be gated, seasonal, washed out, or private. A route drawn between two points is an estimate, not a guarantee that the road is passable in your vehicle.
- Land boundaries are approximate. Do not rely on this to decide whether you are legally allowed to be somewhere, to camp, or to enter. Check with the managing agency.
- Airspace and drone ceilings are a convenience, not clearance. They are not a substitute for an official pre-flight check, and flying is your responsibility.
- Weather and forecasts are forecasts. They change, and conditions on the ground can differ from the nearest station by a great deal.
- Sun, moon and eclipse times are calculated and do not account for the terrain in front of you.
Carry a paper map and a compass where it matters, tell somebody where you are going, and use your own judgement in front of the actual ground.
What it costs
Halfstop is free to use. Premium, which covers the features that cost us money each time they are used, is $4.99 a month or $49 a year, plus any sales tax or VAT where you live. It renews on its own until you stop it. The price you signed up at is the price you keep: if it goes up, that applies to new subscriptions, and you would be asked before it applied to yours.
You can subscribe on this website, where Stripe takes the payment, or in the Android app, where Google Play does. We never see or hold your card details either way. A subscription bought one way works everywhere you sign in to Halfstop.
What is free and what is Premium may change. If a free feature moves, it will be said clearly before it takes effect. Getting your own data out will always remain free.
Canceling
Cancel whenever you like, without asking anybody. If you subscribed here, it is the Manage subscription button in the account menu, which opens our payment provider's own pages. If you subscribed through the App Store, Apple handles it: Settings, your name, Subscriptions. Only Apple can end an App Store subscription, whatever we would prefer. If you subscribed in the Android app, Google Play handles it: the Play Store, your profile picture, Payments and subscriptions. Only Google can end a Google Play subscription.
Canceling stops the next payment. It does not cut you off in the middle of something you have already paid for: Premium runs to the end of the period you bought, and then the account becomes a free one again. We do not refund the unused part of a period as a rule, though if something went wrong, write to support@halfstop.app and we will sort it out. Where the law where you live gives you a right to a refund, that right stands over anything written here.
Nothing of yours is deleted when a subscription ends. Your folders, waypoints, notes and photographs all stay exactly where they are, and export keeps working, because getting your own data out is free and always will be. What stops is the metered part: folders no longer travel between your devices, and the layers and downloads that cost money each time they are used go back to being unavailable. Sign up again and it all resumes.
You can also close the account entirely, which is a different thing and does delete everything. That is under Delete account, and it is not reversible. Cancel the subscription first, or you will carry on paying for an account that no longer exists.
If you are in the EU, the EEA or the UK
Consumer law where you live gives you something the rest of this page does not: fourteen days to withdraw from something bought at a distance, without giving a reason and without a penalty.
Digital services are an exception to that, but a conditional one. The right ends once the service has actually started, and only where you asked for it to start straight away knowing that asking would end it. Subscribing to Halfstop is that request. Premium is on the moment the payment clears — that is what you are paying for, and waiting fourteen days for a map you wanted this weekend would be a strange thing to sell. So by subscribing you are asking us to start immediately, and accepting that this ends the fourteen-day right.
If you subscribed and Premium has not been switched on, the right is intact: tell us within fourteen days and you get all of it back. Either way, write to support@halfstop.app. We would rather settle an unhappy subscription than work out which paragraph applies to it.
This is one operator in Indiana selling to people across a lot of countries, and consumer law is local. Nothing in Governing law below removes a protection your own country gives you. Where the two disagree, yours wins.
Availability
We do not promise Halfstop will be available, working, or free of faults. It depends on services run by other people, and any of them can change their terms, their prices or their availability. We may change or withdraw features. Where a change removes something you were relying on, we will try to say so first.
As it is, without warranty
Halfstop is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including any implied warranty of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, non-infringement, or accuracy of the data it displays.
Limits on what we owe you
To the fullest extent the law allows, Halfstop, LLC is not liable for any indirect, incidental, special or consequential loss arising out of your use of Halfstop — including loss of data, loss of profit, or any injury or damage arising from relying on the maps, routes, land boundaries, airspace or forecasts it shows.
Where liability cannot be excluded, it is limited to the greater of the amount you have paid us in the twelve months before the claim, or one hundred US dollars.
Some places do not allow these exclusions, in which case they apply to you only as far as the law there permits.
Other people's data and software
The map layers, imagery and forecasts belong to the agencies and communities that publish them and are used under their own terms, which are credited on the map. Halfstop's own name, mark and design belong to Halfstop, LLC.
Changes to these terms
If these change, the date at the top changes with them. Continuing to use Halfstop after a change means you accept it. If a change is significant, we will make it visible rather than leaving you to notice.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Indiana, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules. Any dispute will be brought in the state or federal courts located in Indiana, and you and we agree to that venue.
With one limit, and it is not a small one: where you live as a consumer, your own country's law may give you rights that cannot be signed away by a paragraph like this one. It does not try to. See If you are in the EU, the EEA or the UK above.
